A
Proud History
Founded
in 1956, Custom Crafters began manufacturing cabinets and
countertops in Kensington, Maryland. Sons of the original
partners, Rich Rutter and Gary Spates headed the company from
1980 until 2003. They saw the growth of the remodeling industry
in the DC metro area and became dealers for quality cabinet
manufacturers located around the country from Pennsylvania
to Minnesota. The firm acquired a second showroom, Kitchen
Classics, in Arlington, VA in 1992. With his retirement in
2003, Gary Spates passed the company onto Charles “Chuck”
Chwastyk, with Custom Crafters since 1979. Chuck had been
Vice President and Gary’s partner since 1996.
